What is Coconut Oil?Coconut oil is the fatty oil obtained from the kernel or meat of matured coconuts. This oil can be used in a variety of ways from cooking to cosmetics. Coconut Oil is a solid oil. This means that it isn't the type of oil that you can pour out of a bottle. Instead, you'd have to scoop it. It does have a melting point of 76 degrees Fahrenheit, though (which is about room temperature) where it will turn into a liquid. Coconut oil has a ton of awesome health benefits. It is loaded with healthy fatty acids and lauric acid (this kills bacteria, viruses, and fungi). If that isn't awesome enough, this oil is also great at giving you energy and staving off hunger, which helps with weight loss. What are the Uses of Coconut Oil?Coconut Oil has a lot of uses. When I say a lot, I mean a lot. There are websites out there that can list over 100 uses for it! This oil is extremely versatile. I use it in the kitchen, I keep some on a shelf in the bathroom, and I keep some in my room, too. So what exactly are the uses, you ask? Look no farther. Here is a list of my 5 favorite ways to use Coconut Oil. 1. Coconut Oil is a great oil to use for Oil Pulling. The Lauric Acid in it kills the bacteria in your mouth, it whitens your teeth, and it tends to taste better than other oils used for oil pulling. 2. Coconut Oil is a fantastic moisturizer. Not only do the Medium-Chain Triglycerides deeply penetrate the skin for intense moisture, but it also screens 20% of UV exposure. As if that isn't enough, coconut oil has awesome anti-aging and healing properties (helps to heal cuts, burns, scars, etc.). 3. Coconut Oil is a healthy alternative in the kitchen. I live in the south, and southerners LOVE their butter. Butter, however, does not love us. While it tastes good, I feel a lot better about my day when I replace butter with coconut oil. Eating toast? Use coconut oil. Sauteing veggies? Coconut oil is great for this, too. 4. Coconut Oil is an awesome cleanser. Yes, I wash my face with oil. Call me crazy, but I've had acne my entire life and this stuff works. My skin is SO much healthier. Once again, that handy Lauric Acid works wonders when it combats bacteria. 5. Coconut Oil is great for an at home hot oil treatment. No joke, I douse my head in oil once a month and my hair is super soft. Okay, So You Know What it is...Which One Do You Use?While this coconut oil isn't EXTRA virgin, it is still just as good. This is my all time favorite brand. I've noticed that there are different quality coconut oils out there, and this one doesn't disappoint. I've experienced the gritty kinds and I'm happy to say that this one is silky smooth. This is a picture of the 78 fluid ounce container. I tend to buy my coconut oil in bulk. I use it ALL the time AND it is cheaper this way. I'm not kidding. I can either pay $15 - $20 for 16 fluid ounces or $35 - $40 for this container of the 78 fluid ounces. This is SUCH a steal. Want to purchase this one? Here's a link to the Amazon page, just copy and paste it into your browser: http://www.amazon.com/Nutiva-Certified-Organic-Virgin-Coconut/dp/B00BAHA4R6/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1432348995&sr=8-2&keywords=nutiva+coconut+oil There are a TON of different kinds of coconut oil out there. However, it is usually recommended that you use organic extra virgin coconut oil. I haven't tried every brand, but I know that I can highly recommend the few that I have. 1. Nutiva Organic Virgin Coconut Oil. 2. Barlean's Organic Virgin Coconut Oil (Vegan, Non-GMO, Non-Hydrogenated) Once again, this oil isn't EXTRA virgin. What can I say? This was the first ever container of coconut oil that I bought. I remember thinking, "What is this stuff and why are people going so crazy over it?" Then, $13 later, I was the proud owner of my own container. This oil is also very smooth, it smells great, and it tastes great. While this one is just virgin, the Barlean's brand also makes an extra virgin coconut oil. Want to purchase this one? Copy and paste this link into your browser: http://www.amazon.com/Barleans-Organic-Virgin-Coconut-16-Ounce/dp/B002VLZ8D0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1432349536&sr=8-1&keywords=barleans+organic+coconut+oil Lastly, I'd like to give you guys an example of an oil that I really DIDN'T like. 3. The Vitamin Shoppe Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil Yes, I did try one that WAS extra virgin. However, I felt that the quality was really lacking here. The texture was gritty and it wasn't a pleasant experience to use it for oil pulling because of it. However, it didn't smell yucky and it didn't taste bad, either. With this brand you definitely get more bang for your buck, but I usually tend to think of quality over quantity.
